Although some roofs can last as long as 50 years, most roof replacement projects must take place every 20 years or so.

Whether you plan to do the work yourself, or hire a roofing contractor to do the job for you, it is important to plan ahead for this type of home repair. A roof replacement must be done correctly and quickly, as your home is exposed to the elements during the project and vulnerable to damage if it rains before the new roof is complete.

3 Important Things to Do Before a Roof Replacement:

Have all supplies and materials on site. Don't assume that needed materials like nails, roofing felt, or shingles are just a car ride away at your local hardware store. If you are caught short on materials, the whole roof replacement project can come to a grinding halt, which means your home is exposed to changing weather. If you have special-ordered roof shingles, open the packages upon delivery and confirm that the order is correct.

Create a safe working environment. Make sure you have properly sized ladders and scaffolding for your project and know how to use these essential tools. Steep-pitched roofs require the use of safety ropes and a harness.

Make arrangements for project clean up. Save time by having a garbage dumpster in place before you remove the old roof shingles. They can be tossed from the roof right into the garbage.

Most importantly, stay organized and work safely and efficiently. A roof replacement can be challenging, but proper planning helps smooth the way for a successful roofing project.+

Want to save 10% on your next roof project? Depending upon the size and condition of your roof, you might be looking at a job that ranges into the tens of thousands of dollars.

What to Expect from Roofing Cost

Many factors go into the final roofing cost of your home, so only a professional roofing contractor can give you a clear estimate. However, there are ways you can determine whether your roofing cost will fall at the lower or higher end of the cost spectrum:

Materials. The materials you choose for your roof will be the bulk of your roofing cost. Three-tab asphalt shingles are by far the least expensive choice. Wood shake or slate are both pricier, but look fantastic for years. Metal roofs are gaining in popularity, as are synthetic rubber roofing materials.

Roof Pitch. The pitch of your roof will determine not only which kind of materials you use, but how much of them. Very steep roofs are more suited to slate or wood shake than flatter roofs.

Installation. If you are very handy with a hammer and know a great deal about roofing, you can cut your roofing cost by doing the job yourself. However, if you are uncertain of your skills or want to replace your roof quickly, turn to a professional roofing contractor.

Repairs. Once the original roof has been removed, you might find significant damage underneath. This calls for repairs that can push your roofing cost even higher. Hopefully that won't be the case, but it always helps to put a little extra money into the roofing budget, just in case.

Yes, roofing costs are expensive, but the investment in your home is worth the money!

Six Steps to Fixing Stucco

Stucco siding eventually becomes damaged by weather, age and man-made causes. Here's what to do to fix it.

Six Steps to Stucco Siding Repair

Remove loose stucco. Use a hammer and chisel to knock off the loose stucco and reach undamaged siding. Remove and replace damaged wire lath base. If there's a masonry base, scrub it with a wire brush to clean it off. You'll need a shop vac or forced air to clean up the area.

Dampen the masonry base. Not all stucco has a masonry base. If your stucco does, dampen the exposed part of the base.

Apply the scratch coat. Trowel the scratch coat into place nearly flush with the surface and let it dry for about a half hour. Scratch the application with a rake or a special tool called a scarifier to about 1/8-inch deep. Let it dry for a day or two depending on humidity.

Add the brown coat. Level it with a board. Keep the area moist while it sets for a couple of days. Protect it from direct sun to prevent premature drying.

Mix the last coat. Mix 3 ½ parts sand and 2 ½ parts of masonry cement. Add dry pigments to match the original pigment. Mix water into a test batch and let it dry for a day or so to see if it's faded. When your test is successful, mix in enough water to allow spreading the pigmented final coat.

Apply the last coat. Dampen the surface and then brush on a thin layer of the final coat. Use a long bristled brush to flick on the mixture for texture. Use a trowel to flatten any large splatters to match the original stucco siding.

Stucco siding repair is labor intensive. Cement is probably one of the main components of your home's foundation and is trusted to hold your house in place for many years, so it should last a while as your exterior siding, as well. Fiber cement has the key addition of cellulose fibers which improves the tensile strength (reducing brittleness) of the material, making it a suitable siding for home exteriors

If You Want Low Maintenance, It Doesn't Get Much Better than Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber cement siding is available in several styles and looks so much like wood siding that a carpenter might not be able to tell the difference. There are several options available, from a style similar to traditional wood-lap siding to a rustic-looking fiber cement shingle siding. You may even want to combine the two styles, with fiber cement siding on the main part of your home and fiber cement shingles in the gables.

Fiber cement board siding can even be installed with a baked-on color finish so you don't have to paint the siding after it's up, and some manufacturers offer a 15-year labor and material warranty on color fading.

If your home is an elegant colonial, you may want to use smooth-faced fiber cement siding, or you can give your house a casual exterior by using an option with a wood grain.

Fiber cement siding is resistant to:

Rotting

Cracking

Termites and insects

Fire

Wind

Water damage

Fiber cement siding is available from manufacturers like James Hardie, and the Minnesota Green Building Guide lists it as one of the better exterior siding products in terms of life cycle and durability. If you want an exterior siding you can install and forget about maintenance, take a long look at fiber cement siding.

Modern Glass Sliding Doors: Have You Seen Them Lately?

If you were raised in the last quarter century, you've been exposed to glass sliding doors that open on patios. They were a fabulous innovation for their time, opening up your living room or bedroom to easy access to a garden area or pool. They brighten your interiors and lend a spacious feeling, even in a smaller family room or den. But are they still among the better new door options available for your home?

Advantages of New Glass Sliding Doors

The advantages to using sliding glass doors have been known for a while. But in recent years, homeowners have become concerned about the insulating qualities and energy efficiency from the doors that came with their older homes. Today's unbreakable glass sliding doors answer your concerns.

First, you can still open the new doors if you have a screen, and allow for ventilation on days when a breeze will suffice instead of powering on the air conditioner.

Even better, today's new sliding door options include coatings that block ultraviolet rays that can damage furnishings and flooring.

The selection of framing colors is wider than ever before and double-glazed glass sliding doors can really help curb runaway utility bills.

Insulating New Glass Sliding Doors

There is more than one way to insulate a modern sliding glass door. New, innovative track systems glide easily without the need for high maintenance and have a snug fit to keep air from blowing in or out. Many homeowners back exterior glass sliding doors to the patio with shades, curtains, or sliding window treatments that offer privacy as well as additional weather and sound-proofing characteristics. You can even buy pet doors that fit into side panels of the sliding doors.

Insulated glass sliding doors can also serve as solid new door options for the interior of your home, separating a home office from household noise while providing light and a view of the kids' activities. Sets with two or three leaves are available in a concertina mode, folding open and closed. Other models slide conveniently into a pocket, freeing up interior space. Glides, rollers, locking mechanisms, and other hardware on today's glass sliding doors offer greater ease of use and security than those on your parents' old hinged patio doors!

Window Treatment Ideas: Ten Ways Exterior Shutters Add Low-Maintenance Charm

Do you love exterior window shutters but shudder at the maintenance involved? Before you sand, repair, and repaint those old shutters again, look at today's replacement shutters. They replicate those wood shutters of yours in everything except maintenance.

10 Advantages of Today's Shutters

Materials: Lightweight vinyl shutters have color throughout the products. Aluminum has strength and rigidity. Premium fiberglass composite shutters are strong and, depending on style, add insulating capabilities. The material alone doesn't determine quality.

Styles: Various louvered styles, planks, raised panel, Colonial, board-and-batten, arched, sloped, and many other standard styles can restore a fresh look to old windows or add appeal to new replacement windows presently without shutters. Choices are extensive for color, shape, and finish.

Shutters as a custom window treatment: Many manufacturers can make custom sizes and shapes to your specifications.

Strength: For simply decorative shutters, light weight vinyl or aluminum work just fine. Choose premium aluminum or fiberglass for operable, hinged, wind-resistant shutters.

Durability: Warranties range from 3 years to lifetime, depending on the grade and material with which the shutter is made. In high wind areas, look for hurricane-rated shutters.

Privacy: If the lower part of a window invites prying eyes or has an unattractive view, install louvered shutters just tall enough to create privacy. Let in light above them.

Light control: Louvered shutters let you control light and glare from sunlight, street lights, or headlights.

Heat control: Unless you have tinted or double pane windows, solid operable shutters help prevent excess heat buildup from east and west-facing windows. Fiberglass composite shutters do this without the damage to paint and fibers that occurs on wood shutters. In very cold climates fiberglass provides one more layer to hold heat in your home.

Installation: Ground-level shutters are easily installed by homeowners. Call a contractor for higher windows.

Prices: From inexpensive, easy-care vinyl to the finest fiberglass composite shutters, you can find shutters for every budget. A pair of 14" x 48" panels range from under $35 for vinyl to over $500 for a premium fiberglass composite set. There are lesser and more expensive choices in all materials, depending on design, style, wind resistance, and other factors.

Historic districts accept today's easy-care, low maintenance shutters for their excellent replication of wood. And you can choose from endless standard styles or have fun designing a custom window treatment. Sure, you can still get wood and composite wood shutters, but take a break from the upkeep. You've got better ways to spend your time!

Washing Machine Mold Smell

Ever wonder why your new front-loading washing machine smells like mold and mildew? Paved driveways benefit home owners in a number of ways including aesthetic value, maintenance and property value. Homes with paved driveways tend to sell faster and for more money than homes without paved driveways.

Today driveways can be paved with several different materials and applications. Asphalt and concrete driveways are by far the most popular option available today. However, you can also have asphalt and concrete driveways with designs such as stamped designs and even painted or stained designs.

If you're going to pave your driveway this summer consider reading more about it at Driveway Cost. With spring quickly approaching lots of folks are inquiring about driveways, walkways and patios. Check out some of the articles that they have to offer.

Asphalt Driveway Cost

Asphalt Driveways

Exposed Aggregate Walks

Blacktop Driveway Cost

One thing to watch out for are roaming "gypsy" pavers. If someone comes knocking on your door this spring or summer with the following line:

Hello Mr. Smith, we just paved a driveway down the street and we've got some extra asphalt left over. We were wondering if you'd like have your driveway paved today. We can give you a VERY good deal if you can help us use up this left over material.
Folks this is one of the oldest tricks for roaming asphalt guys and it's just a line. These guys will put down the pavement, charge you far more than if you had gotten competitive bids and you'll end up getting railroaded. NEVER fall for this and make sure you get multiple bids for this type of work.

New Lead Paint Law

If you're planning any type of remodeling project after April 22, 2010 then you need to learn about the new lead paint law. The new law will affect projects including; window replacements, siding repairs and replacement, interior painting projects, interior projects that require the removal of existing painted surfaces and many more. Basically if a project disturbs more than 6 sq. ft. of interior surfaces or 20 sq. ft. of exterior surfaces you'll need to make sure your contractor is certified under the new lead paint laws.

I'm not really a huge fan of this new law but lead paint is a dangerous contaminant that must be dealt with properly. The new laws will certainly help educate honest, reputable contractors and make things safer for everyone. Unfortunately some people will use these new laws to confuse consumers and rip them off. The rim joist is the board or structural element that connects all of the joists together and it's located just below the bottom plate of the walls. Rim Joist Insulation is extremely important if you want to keep your floors warm and maintain a well insulated building envelope.

There are 3 basic ways to insulate the rim joist including; fiberglass insulation, rigid foam board insulation and spray foam insulation. If you're like to learn more about how to insulate your rim joist then why not head on over to the home improvement blog and read more about How To Insulate Rim Joists.

Open Cell Vs Closed Cell Foam Insulation

Are you exploring spray foam insulation options for your home? Are you confused about the differences between open cell and closed cell foam insulation's? Many people don't truly know the differences and they are drastically different when it comes to certain properties.

Closed cell foam insulation has a very strong structure that prevents the movement of air and moisture. This makes closed cell foam insulation great in applications that require air sealing and vapor barrier properties.

Open cell foam insulation is very light and about half the cost of closed cell insulation. However, it doesn't have nearly the same strength and it doesn't have the ability to air seal and prevent moisture movement.

If you're interested in learning more then head on over to HCI and read Open Cell Vs Closed Cell Foam Insulation where they have all kinds of home improvement articles.

Insulating Concrete Slabs

If you're looking for information on how to insulate a concrete floor then we'd like to point you towards an article we recently wrote. How To Insulate A Concrete Floor is an article showing two successful methods used for insulating slabs. A higher level of relative humidity, more than 50 percent, in the air can lead to the growth of fungus and mold in homes which can pose health risks, such as asthma and allergies, to a household and also provides an ideal living environment to termites. Dehumidifiers are electrical appliances that are used to reduce the humidity level in the air. These devices are excellent for use in hot and humid conditions where the percentage of water vapor in the air is very high.

The most commonly used types of dehumidifiers are mechanical and desiccant. Mechanical dehumidifiers work by drawing moist air over a coil and a fan. These work best in places where the humidity level is high and warmer temperatures. Desiccant dehumidifiers work by exposing a desiccative substance to an air stream with high relative humidity and do not employ compressors. These are ideal for use in areas with relatively low humidity levels and low temperatures.

Most small areas may only demand a desiccant dehumidifier, but larger areas with humidity issues will demand a mechanical dehumidifier that utilizes compressors or thermo-electric peltiers. Dehumidifiers with compressors feature coils that compressed air or refrigerants move through. These types of dehumidifiers are extremely effective and energy efficient but somewhat loud. Dehumidifiers with thermo-electric peltiers utilize thermo-electric technology by passing an electric current through two dissimilar metals and transferring heat. Thermo-electric dehumidifiers are virtually noiseless because there are no moving parts but are less energy efficient and are only ideal for smaller areas.

While any type of dehumidifier will bring relief to you and your home, it is best to take some time and look at various options available in the market so that you get value for your money. Some recommended features that dehumidifiers should have include:

Humidistat – Electronic or digital controls that allow you to select or program humidity level.

Large Tank Capacity – Dehumidifiers with larger tanks work more efficiently than smaller models.

Washable Air Filter – Most dehumidifiers have an air filter. Choosing a model with a washable air filter will make maintenance easier.

Hose Connection – Purchasing a dehumidifier with a hose connection makes having to empty the condensed water unnecessary. The hose diverts the condensed water into the floor drain or sump pump.

Portability – A dehumidifier that features casters or wheels allows you to easily move the unit.

-------

Guest Post: Dehumidifiers keep you and your home safe from excess moisture that can lead to unhealthy growth of mold and mildew. Finished basements have become so popular for obvious reasons with families trying to squeeze the most out of their homes. The problem is most people don't take the time to understand how to insulate basements properly.

Traditional insulating practices with fiberglass insulation are extremely ineffective and potentially dangerous to your health. Many basements that are insulated with fiberglass insulation end up developing mold and mildew problems.

If you're considering a basement renovation project that includes insulation I recommend you read: Complete Guide To Basement Insulation. The guide has valuable information about different basement insulation approaches that will help you save money and time. Do yourself a favor and study basement insulation before you dive into your next basement remodeling project.

If you're going to be purchasing large quantities of foam board insulation then you might want to check out an article with a Lowes Coupon.

Rockwell Jawhorse

Rockwell Jawhorse

One of the most popular tools on the market this year has been the Rockwell Jawhorse (according to sales figures from Amazon). They have a really great online design tool that makes it really easy to design your closet and look at renderings.

Some of the design considerations for walk-in closets should be:

Functionality over Visual Appearance

Use the corners for hanging clothing as we did (see photo)

Be sure that drawers can easily be opened without hitting other shelving or drawers

Be sure to leave room for tolerances as walls are never perfectly square and plumb

Tape out your design on the floor and make sure there is sufficient room to stand in the closet

If you're interested in learning more about your walk-in closet renovation check out our final walk-in closet design.

Commercial Building Product Headed Home

New codes are sending fire retardant treated wood into residences.
Guest Post By Huck DeVenzio, Arch Wood Protection

Commercial, public, and military buildings have used fire retardant treated (FRT) wood for a century in order to minimize damage from fire. In many applications, building codes have long required a noncombustible material or suitable substitute, such as FRT wood.

Now, this wood is likely to see greater use in single-family homes, and changing residential codes are prompting the trend.

As more people build homes closer to natural areas and closer to each other, the potential consequences of wildfire have increased. Officials in fire-prone areas are closely reviewing codes written for the “wildland-urban interface.”

The International Code Congress has established a model code, the International Urban-Wildland Interface Code, and California’s state fire marshal has developed Wildland Urban Interface Building Standards. These documents emphasize designs and materials that are less susceptible to ignition from firebrands and radiant heat. They effect choice of building products for roofing, siding, windows, trim, and even decks.

FRT wood is pressure-treated with fire retardants that reduce flame spread and smoke development in lumber and plywood. It is available in interior types and exterior products that retain fire retardance when exposed to the elements.

For more information on FRT wood, including videos on residential usage, visit www.usefrtw.com.

For practical homeowner tips, see www.firewise.org.

# # #

Author Bio: Huck DeVenzio is manager of marketing communications at Arch Wood Protection, Inc., a leading producer of wood treating chemicals and licensor of some of the best known brands of treated wood, including Wolmanized® lumber. Whether you're upgrading for style (stainless looks great!), to save energy, or because your dishwasher just up and quit, here's four great ways to save money on your next purchase.

Buy Used on Craigslist
If you're buying an appliance to replace a broken one and you're working with a tight budget, Craigslist is a great place to look. At any given time, there are hundreds of used appliances for sale, most at least 50% off retail. We've bought a refrigerator, washer, and dryer with good experiences, and our friends bought a refrigerator and a stove. Why is Craigslist great? Because at any given time, someone in your community will be upgrading a 3-year-old appliance to a brand new one, and you'll like save more than a few hundred bucks upgrading. Want to know how much to pay? Here's our rules: 1-2 years old: 50-60% of retail; 2-4 years: 40-50% of retail; 4-5 years: 30-40% of retail; 5+ years: 10-30%.

... or Get a Coupon
If you prefer new appliances to the used variety, make sure you pick up a coupon before purchasing. Almost all major retail stores offer online coupons for at least 10% or more. One Project Closer keeps a current list of Sears Coupons (including appliance coupons) that's a good place to start. They also feature a number of ways to pickup a 10% off Lowe's Coupon or this Lowes Coupon.

Install it Yourself
Whether you buy it from Craigslist or from a retailer, you can save $50-100 bucks by installing the appliance yourself. Installing a refrigerator is little more than plugging it in, and in if has a built in water dispenser, hooking up a single water line. Washers and dryers are similarly easy to install. Perhaps the most complicated appliance to install is a dishwasher, which requires only three hookups. Check out Home Construction Improvement for their instructions on installing a dishwasher.

Borrow a Truck and Haul away the Old One
Perhaps the simplest way to save money on appliance purchases is to haul the old appliance away yourself. Most districts will allow you to dump appliances for free. Many will recycle key components of a broken appliance before sending the remaining parts to a landfill. Hauling an appliance away yourself will save between $30-60 bucks.

Where To Buy Fein Universal Cutting Blades

Fein Multimaster Tool Blades

Recently I wrote about the Fein Multimaster tool which has become an extremely popular multi-purpose tool for any workshop. Factory-reconditioned tools are generally returned to the manufacturer and repaired to "like new" condition. Typically they end up having only very minor cosmetic defects and some actually look brand new! I recently ordered a factory-reconditioned tool that I swore was still new.

Refurbished Compressor Kits

Buying a refurbished or factory-reconditioned compressor kit is an inexpensive way to get a great compressor along with some great nail guns bundled in a package. Most of the major tool manufacturers offer these refurbished compressor kits at deep discounts. The following are several factory-reconditioned compressor kits that I think are great values.

Bostitch

Factory-Reconditioned Bostitch U/CPACK3 3-Tool Compressor Combo Kit - $219.99 - Kit includes: 2-1/2 In. 16 gauge finish nailer, 1 In. 18 gauge finish stapler, 1-1/4 In. 18 gauge brad nailer, CAP60P-OF 2.0 HP (Peak) oil-free compressor, and a contractor's canvas tool bag. The blog is about their journey fixing and restoring their home, about healing and dealing with the total devastation that Katrina brought to that region. Their blog is so much more than home improvement, yet every aspect of trying to get their life back to normal revolves around fixing up their home. I encourage you to check out their site and tell them Todd sent you.

Blogroll Incentive

A couple of weeks ago I launched my Home Improvement Blogroll and so far I've received a few additions to the list. In an attempt to get more people signed up for the blogroll I've decided to add a little incentive. The first person to refer 3 blogs to the blogroll will get to have a full week add or posting on my blogroll site. I'll post anything you'd like about your site for a week. All you need to do is get 3 blogs to sign up for the blogroll, have them refer back to you in their email and at the end of the week we'll discuss what you'd like to post on my site.

I'm eager to add more sites for a couple of reasons. The first and foremost is its such a great way to find other blogs about home improvement and home projects. Secondly it's a great way for all of us to get traffic to our sites. So spread the word and help me find more bloggers.

blogroll
home improvement blogroll

Blog of the Week

I've decided that maybe I should start doing a short review of the blogrolls sites so that folks can get a quick glimpse into what other sites are writing about. So this week I'd like to tell you about one of my favorite blogs and a guy that has been very helpful to me in working on my blogs. The blog is called Homeowner's Blog. This blog is written by Paul Thurst who also happens to be an engineer. Paul's site focuses on everyday things around the house and some of his technical interests. One of the things that Paul has been writing about lately I find very interesting. He's been giving some really great information about using solar power in residential homes. His postings are very informative and full of useful technical information. Drop by Paul's site sometime and tell him I sent you.

Blogroll Updates

So far 7 blogs have joined the blogroll and I'm actively searching for more.
